These two songs by Ravel were written in 1914 at Saint-Jeande-Luz. The first song
Kaddisch
uses an Aramaic text from the Jewish prayer book;
L’Énigme éternelle
is based on a traditional Yiddish verse. They were first performed in June 1914 by Alvina Alvi (who commissioned them) with Ravel at the piano. Ravel orchestrated the songs in 1919-1920.
This arrangement for violin and guitar by Gregg Nestor was commissioned by
Duo Sonidos
(William Knuth, violin and Adam Levin, guitar) who premiered them on July 14th, 2013 at North Shore Congregation Israel, Glencoe, Illinois.
